LEADERSHIP & CONFIDENCE COACH

Bringing clarity and focus to mums returning to work after maternity leave

When you return to work after parental leave it can feel like starting a new job - but strange, because it is YOUR job and it should feel familiar.

Everyone says "not much happened while you were away". On your Keeping In Touch days, no-one really had any updates for you. But things don't feel quite the same.

The decisions you used to make easily take longer and you've started to second guess them. Colleagues you relied on for advice and a friendly word have moved on to different things and even though the office is busy, you are starting to feel isolated.

You rush to do the nursery drop off, handing over a tearful child to a kind stranger (who assures you they will be fine when you've gone ....). You scramble to pull yourself together before heading into your meeting.

Pulling Postman Pat out of your bag along with your papers you have a moment where you wonder what on earth you are doing here.

What happened to the confident career woman? When did she become a tired, tearful and slightly frazzled mess? You wonder when it will get easier - surely it should be feeling easier by now?

You find that you are constantly kicking yourself for missed opportunities. You wish you’d spoken up in the team meeting last week - but at the time, you weren't sure what you had to say was relevant.

You might have been passed over for a big project that would have had your name on it before - because "you've not been back long" or "you only work part time". You feel a weird mix of frustration that your career is stalling along with relief because maybe, you wouldn't have been up to it anyway.

Perhaps your frustration with work is starting to spill over into family life. You've found yourself feeling guilty for losing your temper and snapping over little things.

Or maybe you've seen a job that you would have been brilliant at before maternity - but you are questioning if you would really be good enough to apply now?

You are not who you used to be and maybe you aren’t quite sure who you are now. You are still adjusting to the working mum version of you. You might be worrying that your professional skills have gone a little rusty.

You might be feeling stuck, lost, lonely and guilty. Knowing that something needs to change but not sure where to start or if you have the energy.

As a certified Coaching Professional with a background in Behavioural Science, I am here to help you thrive after your return to work. Whatever you are struggling with right now, it is time to bring back the best and bravest version of you.

SUZANNE LINDSAY HOLT

Integrity. Belief. Bravery

I am Suzanne Lindsay Holt, an EMCC and ILM accredited coach based in West Yorkshire.
I first discovered coaching as part of a Leadership Development Programme and it was the closest thing to work place magic and I was instantly hooked.

I am a 44 year old mum to a 8 year old Lego whizz and force of nature named Thomas. Becoming a mum changed my life in so many ways that I never expected.

My big secret is ... that in the early days, I really struggled with being a working mum!

I loved being a mum.   I really loved working.

But trying to do the two together felt impossible. I was tying myself in knots trying to be all things to all people - and feeling like a failure.

I lost my purpose, motivation and confidence! I also felt like I had lost part of what made me - ME!

It was like the old work me had vanished. It took me longer to make decisions and I second guessed everything. I felt like a square peg in a round hole and my self confidence was at rock bottom!

What I wish I’d known at the time was:

To treat myself with the same kindness and compassion as I naturally give to others. It’s an emotional time and an overwhelming one. Giving myself the gift of time and kindness would have helped a lot!
To use the opportunity to be a fresh pair of eyes in a safe pair of hands. I spent such a lot of time (and worry) focussing on the things that I didn’t know. The things that I had missed. All of the information and connections I’d had at my finger tips before to make quick decisions was missing, which knocked my confidence. What I did have, was the chance to observe, think and ask questions! I wasn’t quick enough to spot the incredible value in this!

Not to use the word “only” I “only work part time”, “I am only here 3 days”. It’s such a small word but it really quickly started to devalue the way I felt about my contribution at work!

There is a name for this huge change. Matrescence - the process of becoming a mother. It changes you physically, emotionally, socially. It even re-wires the connections in your brain. It is ok if that takes a bit of getting used to. It is the biggest change we experience after adolescence.

I learnt a lot of tools and techniques during my first two years back after maternity leave and I continue to use them today to help me blend family, business and the things that make me - ME.

I bring many of these tools, techniques and experiences into my coaching.

I have a huge belief in coaching and everything it can help you to achieve.
INSIDE coaching represents everything I’ve learned in the 12 years of being a coach and my experience of being a working mum.
