As a parent it wasn’t too much of a surprise to see the US Surgeon General announce that parents are at the risk of burnout.
But what exactly does that mean the mums, dads and grandparents in your organisation?
We already know that being a mum in the construction industry is a tough balancing act. Juggling the demands of a demanding job with the pressure to be a magnificent mum can often lead to burnout. In the UK, research has shown that mums in construction are at a higher risk of burnout compared to their male counterparts.
This is in part due to the dual responsibilities of work and parenting, which can be overwhelming at times. The study found that women in construction are often expected to work long hours and take on extra responsibilities, all while trying to balance the demands of family life.
To address the issue of burnout among mums in construction, it is important to provide support and resources to help them manage their workload and responsibilities.
But we need to do more to widen access to flexible working arrangements. From part-time hours or remote work options to flexible career paths. We need to do more to help parents and grandparents to balance their work and family commitments more effectively. Creating better opportunities for mums - helping dads to spend time with their children and supporting a more equitable division of work at home.
As well as providing flexibility you can also help by providing specialised support and coaching. Helping your talented mums to adapt to their new identity - whilst continuing to build their careers.
Investing in their wellbeing and professional development at this key stage in their career makes good business sense.
